Chapter 9 - An Unexpected Alliance

We met at a quiet downtown coffee shop two blocks away from my father’s corporate offices.

Clara sat in a corner booth,

stirring her tea nervously,

her eyes dark with exhaustion and lingering anxiety.

As I slid into the vinyl seat across from her,

she flinched slightly,

expecting hostility.

“Hello,

Clara,

” I said softly,

signaling the waiter for a black coffee.

“Elena,

” Clara whispered,

her voice cracking slightly.

“I.

.

.

I still can't believe you agreed to meet me after everything.

” “Why wouldn't I?” I asked,

keeping my tone gentle.

“We both survived the exact same con artist.

” Clara let out a shaky breath,

tears pooling in the corners of her eyes.

“He destroyed my life for three years,

Elena.

When we married fresh out of college,

he was charming and sweet.

Then the control started,

the financial isolation,

the threats whenever I tried to leave.

” “He tried the exact same playbook on me,

” I nodded sympathetically.

“Only difference was,

I had a grandmother who cared enough to warn me,

and you had the courage to show up at the chapel.

” “I was terrified,

” Clara admitted,

wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

“If Julian found out I was going to your wedding,

God knows what he would have done.

” “Well,

he’s not doing anything to anyone anymore,

” I said firmly,

leaning forward.

“He’s sitting in a jail cell facing ten to fifteen years for fraud and forgery.

” Clara gasped,

her eyes widening in shock.

“Fifteen years?” “Between the forged loans in my name and the bigamy charges involving you,

the district attorney is throwing the book at him,

” I explained.

“And his mother is going down right along with him for aiding and abetting.

” A profound wave of relief washed over Clara’s face,

as if a fifty-pound backpack had finally been lifted from her shoulders.

“Good,

” she murmured fiercely.

“He deserves every single day behind bars.

” “Which brings me to why I asked you here,

” I continued,

pulling a folder from my tote bag.

“My father’s legal team is preparing a civil lawsuit to recover the stolen assets Julian drained from my accounts.

” Clara looked warily at the folder.

“What does that have to do with me?” “Because he drained your accounts too,

didn't he?” I asked pointedly.

Clara lowered her gaze,

nodding slowly in shame.

“He left me with nothing when I tried to leave him last year.

That’s why I couldn't afford the legal fees to finalize our divorce.

” “Well,

you don't need to worry about legal fees anymore,

” I smiled warmly,

pushing a business card across the table.

“My father’s lawyers are taking on your case pro bono as part of our joint prosecution against Julian.

We are going to strip him of every single dime he tried to steal.

” Clara stared at the business card,

trembling as fresh tears of gratitude spilled down her cheeks.

“I.

.

.

I don't know how to thank you,

Elena.

” “You don't have to thank me,

” I replied,

taking a sip of my coffee.

“We’re just two women cleaning up the same trash.
