Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and the Audit

Three days after the aborted wedding,

the reality of Julian’s crimes began to surface through a series of startling financial discoveries.

With the help of my father’s corporate legal team,

we started auditing the joint accounts Julian and I had shared over the past two years.

What we uncovered was nothing short of a financial catastrophe.

Julian hadn't just lied about his marital status; he had systematically embezzled funds from my personal savings account to pay off debts accrued by Clara and maintain his lavish lifestyle.

Sitting across the polished mahogany desk in my father’s office,

lead forensic accountant Mr.

Henderson laid out three thick binders filled with bank statements.

“It’s worse than we initially thought,

Elena,

” Mr.

Henderson said,

adjusting his glasses gravely.

“Mr.

Vance didn't just borrow your money.

He took out three separate high-interest loans using your forged signature on the collateral documents.

” My stomach churned as I looked at the jagged lines of my own name copied clumsily onto loan agreements.

“Can we prove he forged these?” I asked,

my voice tight with anger.

“Without a doubt,

” Mr.

Henderson nodded,

pointing to a highlighted discrepancy.

“The IP addresses and digital timestamps trace directly back to his office computer while you were out of town on business.

” My father slammed his fist against the arm of his leather chair.

“That scoundrel was planning to dump massive debt onto Elena right after the wedding while he collected the trust payout!” “And since the wedding never happened,

his grandmother’s trust fund reverted entirely to charity,

leaving him completely broke and legally exposed,

” Mr.

Henderson added with a faint smile.

Karma moved swiftly when backed by competent lawyers and forensic accountants.

Julian was currently being held at the county detention center awaiting arraignment on multiple felony charges of forgery,

grand larceny,

and bigamy.

His mother,

Martha Vance,

had also been implicated after bank records proved she wired hush money to Clara from an offshore account.

“What happens to Clara in all of this?” I asked,

genuinely curious.

“She’s cooperating fully with the district attorney's office in exchange for immunity,

” Mr.

Henderson explained.

“She was manipulated just as much as you were,

Elena,

though she stayed quiet longer out of fear.

” I nodded slowly,

realizing how easily I could have ended up in Clara's shoes if Grandma Vance hadn't intervened at the eleventh hour.

“I want to meet with her,

” I announced suddenly.

My father looked startled.

“Clara? Why on earth would you want to see the woman who was married to your fiancé?” “Because we share the exact same enemy,

” I replied calmly.

“And together,

May you like

we can make sure Julian never hurts another person again.

”
