Chapter 20 - The Open Road

Spring returned to the city with a sudden explosion of blooming cherry blossoms and warm,
inviting sunshine.
My consulting agency had expanded into a thriving downtown office with a dedicated team of brilliant young professionals.
Clara’s marine conservation project was successfully launched along the coast,
drawing national acclaim and accolades.
Grandma Vance was living comfortably in her seaside cottage,
healthy,
happy,
and enjoying the peaceful serenity of the ocean breeze.
And I was standing on the observation deck of a coastal ferry,
watching the sparkling blue waves roll beneath the hull as the vessel cut gracefully through the water.
The salty wind whipped my hair around my face,
carrying the sweet scent of freedom and adventure.
I leaned against the railing,
resting my chin on my hands as I looked out toward the endless horizon where the ocean met the sky.
my entire world had collapsed around me in a cloud of deceit and broken vows.
I had believed my happiness depended on a man who was nothing more than a carefully constructed illusion.
Now,
looking back,
I realized that the greatest blessing in disguise had been the catastrophe that forced me to walk away.
I didn't need a fairytale wedding or a prince charming with a hidden agenda.
I had myself.
My strength,
my resilience,
my unyielding spirit,
and the unshakable knowledge that no matter what storms life might bring in the future,
I could weather them all.
A soft footstep approached from behind me,
followed by a familiar,
cheerful voice.
“Penny for your thoughts,
CEO?” Clara asked,
walking up to the railing with a cup of iced coffee in her hand.
I turned my head and smiled brightly,
accepting the offered cup.
“Just thinking about how wonderful the view is from this side of the horizon,
” I replied honestly.
Clara smiled,
leaning against the railing beside me as the ferry pulled closer to the island dock where Grandma Vance was waiting on the wooden pier to welcome us.
“Ready for the weekend?” Clara asked.
“More than ready,
” I said,
taking a sip of my coffee and watching the sunlight dance across the cresting waves.
The road ahead stretched out infinitely before us,
bright,
open,
and entirely our own to conquer.
I took a deep,
grounding breath,
May you like
smiled into the wind,
and stepped forward into the future.
