Chapter 3 - The Crash Was Never an Accident

Luca closed the library doors.
No guests.
No staff.
No excuses.
Only Luca.
Emma.
Enzo.
Marco.
Belini.
“Start at the beginning,” Luca said.
Enzo looked at Emma first.
“The beginning will hurt.”
She folded her arms.
“So has the rest of tonight.”
Fair.
Enzo sat.
Twenty years earlier, Antonio Moretti had been preparing to reorganize the family holdings.
Not because he was dying.
Because he had discovered someone inside the family office was selling access to Moretti routes, properties, and political contacts.
The leak had been small at first.
Then expensive.
Then dangerous.
Antonio narrowed it to three people.
One was Vittorio Bellini.
Belini’s father.
She flinched.
Enzo continued.
“Antonio never proved Vittorio was the source.”
Belini’s shoulders loosened slightly.
“Because he wasn’t.”
Enzo looked at her.
“Maybe.”
Luca cut in.
“The crash.”
Enzo nodded.
Antonio, his wife Lucia, Luca, and Lily had been driving back from a family property.
Luca remembered rain.
Headlights.
His mother shouting.
Then nothing until a hospital room.
He had been told the car lost control.
Enzo said:
“It was forced off the road.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Luca’s face did not move.
“By whom?”
“I saw the second vehicle.”
“Driver?”
“No.”
“Plate?”
“Removed.”
“Then what do you know?”
“I know the men who reached the wreck first were not police.”
Marco leaned forward.
“Recovery crew?”
Enzo nodded.
“They took Lily.”
Emma touched her scar unconsciously.
Enzo continued.
“I followed.”
He found the men at a private clinic outside Albany.
One man recognized him.
So Enzo did the only thing he believed could keep Lily alive.
He took her.
Then disappeared with her.
Luca stared.
“You had my sister.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Three days.”
The answer was worse than twenty years.
Because it meant Enzo had once had the power to bring her home.
Emma whispered, “Why didn’t you?”
Enzo looked at her.
“Because someone inside the Moretti estate knew I had you.”
Silence.
He received one message.
No name.
No signature.
Only:
BRING THE GIRL HOME AND THE BOY DIES NEXT.
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“You believed it.”
“Yes.”
“You left her at Saint Agnes.”
“Yes.”
Emma’s eyes filled.
“You left me.”
Enzo did not defend himself.
“Yes.”
That mattered.
He continued.
He watched the orphanage from a distance.
Paid anonymously for Emma’s medical care.
Moved records whenever anyone searched too closely.
Then Antonio died twelve years ago.
Natural causes.
At least according to every file.
Enzo began preparing to return.
But someone reactivated the sealed trust search.
Looking specifically for Lily.
“Who?” Luca asked.
Enzo looked at Belini.
She went still.
“Vittorio Bellini.”
Belini shook her head.
“My father was protecting the estate.”
“From Lily?”
“From fraud.”
Enzo pulled out old correspondence.
Vittorio had ordered orphanage records searched.
Scar records.
Age matches.
Female children found near Albany.
Emma stared at Belini.
“So your father found me.”
“No,” Belini said.
Then hesitated.
“My father found possibilities.”
“And you found me.”
Belini looked away.
Luca’s voice became quiet.
“How long?”
“Four months.”
Emma’s stomach turned.
The recruitment search.
Her medical history.
Her pendant.
Belini whispered:
“I saw the orphanage photo.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“And instead of telling me?”
“I needed proof.”
“So you hid her face.”
“I panicked.”
“You planted a ring.”
“I wanted her removed from the estate.”
“Before I could see her.”
“Yes.”
The admission landed.
Emma stared.
“You knew I might be his sister and tried to have me arrested.”
Belini’s face cracked.
“I thought if you disappeared quietly, nobody would reopen the trust.”
Luca took one step toward her.
Marco moved slightly.
Not to stop Luca.
To remind him he was not alone.
Belini kept talking.
“My father told me the trust would destroy everything.”
“What does that mean?” Luca asked.
She looked at him.
“It does not just divide control between you and Lily.”
Enzo closed his eyes.
He knew.
Luca saw it.
“What else?”
Belini whispered:
“If Lily Moretti returns alive, every transfer made under the single-heir clause since the crash becomes reviewable.”
Marco frowned.
“How much?”
Belini looked at him.
“Everything.”
Twenty years of property transfers.
Voting rights.
Family loans.
Shell-company acquisitions.
Emma felt sick.
This was not about inheriting half of Luca’s empire.
Her existence could invalidate the legal foundation underneath it.
Then Enzo spoke.
“That is why someone needed Lily dead.”
Luca looked at him.
“Who benefited most?”
Enzo answered with two words.
“Family counsel.”
Marco went still.

The Moretti legal office had controlled every transfer since the crash.
And its senior partner for twenty-seven years had been Vittorio Bellini.
