Chapter 8 - The Exchange Rinaldi Thought Luca Would Control

Rinaldi chose the location.

Old Bellini warehouse.

River district.

Neutral on paper.

Nothing was neutral.

Luca expected an ambush.

Emma expected Luca to exclude her.

He tried.

“No.”

She stared at him.

“It’s my pendant.”

“I know.”

“My trust.”

“I know.”

“My identity.”

“Yes.”

“So stop saying no.”

Luca looked at Marco.

Marco looked away.

Coward.

Emma continued.

“They spent twenty years making decisions about Lily Moretti while Lily wasn’t in the room.”

That ended the argument.

They went together.

No army.

Too obvious.

Luca.

Emma.

Marco.

Enzo.

Belini insisted on coming.

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

Belini looked at her.

“Because my family helped create this.”

“Your father did.”

“And I made it worse.”

Emma studied her.

Then nodded.

The warehouse held one long table.

Across it sat Adrian Rinaldi.

Fifty-eight.

Silver at the temples.

Perfect suit.

Not the company.

The man behind it.

Mateo Vega sat nearby.

Alive.

Unhurt.

Isabel nearly collapsed when she saw the live feed from Marco’s concealed camera.

Adrian smiled at Emma.

“Lily.”

She hated how easily he used the name.

“Emma.”

His smile widened.

“Identity is complicated.”

“Not for you.”

Luca almost smiled.

Adrian looked at the pendant.

“Seal.”

Emma looked at the missing ledger page.

“Page.”

Adrian nodded.

Simple.

Too simple.

Luca noticed the second folder near Adrian’s elbow.

“What is that?”

“Insurance.”

Emma looked at him.

Adrian opened it.

A legal declaration signed twenty years earlier by Enzo Moretti.

Emma’s heart dropped.

Enzo went pale.

The declaration stated that Lily Moretti died from injuries three days after the crash.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Notarized.

Emma stared at Enzo.

“You said you left me at Saint Agnes.”

“I did.”

“Then why did you sign this?”

Enzo looked broken.

“Because Antonio ordered me to.”

Luca’s face hardened.

“Explain.”

Enzo did.

Antonio needed DeSantis to stop searching.

A dead child ended the hunt.

So Enzo signed a false death declaration.

The same lie that saved Emma also legalized the single-heir trust.

Emma understood.

“My father’s protection caused the transfers.”

Enzo nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian smiled.

“And that is why your Restoration Trust is vulnerable.”

If Emma argued the death declaration was fraud, then everything after it reopened.

But Enzo himself had signed it knowingly.

Rinaldi would argue the Moretti family created the fraud.

Not DeSantis.

Shared guilt.

Shared liability.

Years of litigation.

Enough to freeze the trust indefinitely.

Luca looked at Adrian.

“That is your leverage.”

“No.”

Adrian tapped the missing page.

“This is.”

He slid it halfway across the table.

The contingency clause was visible.

Restoration required proof that the false death declaration was executed under coercion or imminent threat.

Emma looked at Enzo.

“Were you threatened?”

He said nothing.

Adrian smiled.

There.

The problem.

Luca’s voice lowered.

“Enzo.”

The older man looked at him.

“Tell the truth.”

Enzo closed his eyes.

“No.”

Emma felt cold.

“No what?”

“I was not threatened.”

Adrian leaned back.

Victory.

Then Enzo continued.

“I was bribed.”

Everyone froze.

Luca stared.

“With what?”

Enzo looked at Emma.

“Your life.”

Silence.

DeSantis had offered a deal.

Sign Lily dead.

He would stop searching the orphanages.

Refuse.

He would search every institution from Albany to Boston until he found her.

Enzo signed.

Not under threat to himself.

Under threat to Lily.

Vittorio had preserved the correspondence.

Belini’s father had it.

Marco smiled slowly.

Adrian’s expression changed.

Belini placed a sealed packet on the table.

“My father gave me this before we came.”

Inside:

DeSantis’s original letter.

IF ENZO CERTIFIES THE GIRL DEAD, THE SEARCH ENDS.

The contingency condition was satisfied.

Coercion.

Documented.

Adrian’s composure broke.

Emma held out her hand.

“Page.”

Mateo stood.

One of Adrian’s men moved.

Luca did not.

Marco did.

Security doors opened behind them.

Not Moretti men.

Federal financial investigators.

Vittorio had arranged them.

Adrian stared at Belini.

She gave him the smallest smile.

“I’m trying something new.”

“What?”

“Evidence.”

Emma took the missing page.

Then looked at Mateo.

“You’re free.”

The young man stood.

May you like

Adrian Rinaldi was no longer negotiating.

He was being documented.
