Chapter 9 - Emma Decided What Lily Moretti Would Inherit

The injunction hearing lasted four hours.
The consequences lasted longer.
DNA established Emma as Lily Moretti.
The pendant established Lucia’s chain of custody.
The original ledger proved her death had never been confirmed.
DeSantis’s letter proved Enzo’s false declaration was coerced by a threat to Lily’s life.
The Restoration Trust activated.
Then everyone looked at Emma.
She hated that part.
Banks wanted instructions.
Lawyers wanted signatures.
Bellini companies wanted settlements.
Rinaldi investors wanted mercy.
Moretti board members wanted certainty.
Luca wanted one thing.
“What do you want?”
Nobody else had asked it that plainly.
Emma looked at the asset schedule.
Twenty years of transactions.
Some fraudulent.
Some legitimate.
Some built on companies employing thousands of people who had nothing to do with DeSantis.
She could unwind everything.
Legally.
Vittorio expected it.
Belini feared it.
Marco prepared for it.
Emma closed the file.
“No.”
The room stared.
Luca did not.
“No what?”
“I’m not taking half the city apart because somebody tried to erase me when I was five.”
Vittorio leaned forward.
“You are entitled—”
“I know.”
That stopped him.
Emma continued.
“Review every transfer.”
Marco nodded.
“Recover anything still controlled by Rinaldi or DeSantis shells.”
Luca nodded.
“Return anything taken directly from the Moretti trust.”
Another nod.
“Bellini properties?”
Belini went still.
Emma looked at her.
“Were they purchased below market through the fraudulent structure?”
Vittorio answered.
“Yes.”
“How much below?”
“Different amounts.”
“Then repay the difference plus interest.”
Belini stared.
“You’re not taking them?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Emma looked at her.
“Because I don’t want your house.”
Belini almost laughed.
It came out like a breath.
Emma continued.
“But you are funding an employee legal-defense program.”
Belini blinked.
“What?”
“You framed me because you thought staff were disposable.”
Luca’s mouth almost curved.
Emma looked at him.
“Don’t.”
He looked innocent.
Poorly.
Emma turned back.
“You’ll fund it for ten years.”
Belini considered.
Then nodded.
“Fair.”
Enzo relinquished every family voting right attached to his old trustee role.
He said he had made enough decisions for Lily without her permission.
Emma appreciated that.
Vittorio retired from trust counsel.
Actually retired.
Luca demanded it.
Belini supported him.
That surprised everyone.
Adrian Rinaldi faced fraud, coercion, kidnapping, and conspiracy charges.
Mateo Vega went home to his mother.
Mrs. Vega resigned from the estate.
Emma stopped her.
“You were coerced.”
“I still copied your pendant.”
“Yes.”
“I betrayed this house.”
Emma looked at Luca.
He understood.
“Then don’t work for the house.”
Mrs. Vega frowned.
Emma continued.
“Work for the new foundation.”
A restitution office for employees and families harmed by the old trust structure.
Mrs. Vega started crying.
Emma hated crying rooms now.
Too many.
Then came the question everyone avoided.
Would Emma stay a maid?
Belini asked first.
Not cruelly.
Actually curious.
Emma looked at her black-and-white uniform.
“No.”
Luca’s face changed.
She saw it.
Then smiled.
“I’m also not becoming a professional heiress.”
Marco coughed to hide a laugh.
Luca failed to hide his.
Emma continued.
“I want to work with the foundation.”
“Doing what?” Luca asked.
“Finding people the family forgot.”
That silenced the room.
Because everyone understood what she meant.
Employees.
Dependents.
Witnesses.
People hidden under paperwork.
People like her.
Luca nodded.
“Done.”
Emma looked at him.
“You don’t get to say done.”
His eyebrow lifted.
“It’s my foundation too.”
“Exactly.”
For the first time in twenty years, Lily Moretti made a Moretti boss negotiate.
She enjoyed it more than she expected.
That evening, Emma returned to the ballroom.
Empty now.
No guests.
No music.
No ring on the floor.
Only the place where everything changed.
Luca joined her.
“You could move upstairs.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I spent four months cleaning those rooms.”
“That seems unrelated.”
“It is emotionally related.”
He accepted that.
Emma touched the pendant.
“Did you really remember denting this?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“You cried for two hours.”
“I was five.”
“You were dramatic.”
“I’m reconsidering this sibling relationship.”
He smiled.
Then his expression softened.
“I looked for you.”
Emma knew.
“I know.”
“I stopped after ten years.”
She looked at him.
“You were a child too.”
That sentence did something to him.
For twenty years Luca had treated Lily’s disappearance like a failure he personally owned.
Emma could see it now.
She touched his arm.
“You didn’t lose me.”
He looked at her.
“Someone took me.”
Different sentence.
Different guilt.
Luca nodded once.
Then Marco entered.
Of course.
“Boss.”
Emma sighed.
“If this is another secret trust, I’m leaving.”
Marco almost smiled.
“No trust.”
“Good.”
“One recovered audio file.”
Luca’s expression changed.
“From where?”
“Antonio’s archive.”
Emma looked at him.
Their father.
Marco held up an old recorder.
“One message addressed to both of you.”
Emma’s chest tightened.
Luca looked at her.
Neither reached for it immediately.
Because for once, they understood something important.
They did not have to open every family secret the moment it appeared.
May you like
They could choose when.
Together.
