Chapter 4 - Vittorio Bellini Came to the Estate

Belini called her father herself.
Luca made her.
Not with a threat.
With one sentence.
“If he is innocent, bring him here.”
Vittorio Bellini arrived forty minutes later.
Silver hair.
Navy suit.
No visible fear.
Until he saw Enzo.
Then he stopped.
“Impossible.”
Enzo smiled without warmth.
“That word has had a difficult evening.”
Luca stayed seated.
“Tell me about the crash.”
Vittorio looked at Belini.
She said nothing.
“Now,” Luca said.
Vittorio exhaled.
“I did not order it.”
“That was not the question.”
“No.”
Vittorio looked at Emma.
And recognition appeared too quickly.
Emma saw it.
“So you knew.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
Luca’s hand tightened once against the chair.
“How long?”
“Four months.”
“The same as Belini.”
“Yes.”
“You told her to remove Emma.”
Vittorio looked at his daughter.
Belini went white.
“I told her to keep Lily away from the estate until I could verify identity.”
Belini whispered, “You told me if Luca saw her, the trust would reopen.”
“Because it would.”
Emma stared.
“You both treated me like a legal problem.”
Vittorio did not deny it.
Luca’s voice cooled.
“The crash.”
Vittorio looked older suddenly.
“Antonio suspected me.”
“Were you involved?”
“No.”
“Who was?”
Vittorio hesitated.
Enzo laughed once.
“There.”
Luca’s eyes narrowed.
“You know.”
“Yes.”
“Name.”
Vittorio looked toward Marco.
Then the closed doors.
“The Moretti family office had two senior legal partners then.”
“Yourself and?”
“Carlo DeSantis.”
Marco swore quietly.
DeSantis.
Dead seven years.
Former family counsel.
Former trustee.
The man who drafted the single-heir clause.
Enzo stood.
“He was at the clinic.”
Vittorio nodded.
“I know.”
Everyone stared.
“How?” Luca asked.
“Because after the crash, DeSantis asked me to certify Lily dead.”
Silence.
Emma stopped breathing.
“You did?” Luca asked.
“No.”
Vittorio looked at Emma.
“I refused.”
“Then why was she legally declared dead?”
“Someone forged my authorization.”
Marco looked at Luca.
Another forged credential.
Old Moretti systems again.
Vittorio continued.
“I realized DeSantis was altering trust records. I told Antonio.”
“Before or after the crash?”
“Before.”
“So Antonio knew.”
“Yes.”
“Then why did he keep DeSantis?”
“Because he wanted proof.”
That sounded like Luca.
Too much.
Vittorio opened his briefcase.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Antonio’s handwriting.
Luca recognized it immediately.
Vittorio had kept it for twenty years.
“Why?”
“Because Antonio told me to open it only if Lily returned.”
Emma looked at Luca.
He nodded once.
Vittorio opened it.
Inside was a short letter.
Antonio had discovered DeSantis was using the single-heir structure to move assets into companies controlled by outside investors.
He suspected the crash was meant to kill both children.
If Luca and Lily died, emergency control would shift temporarily to family counsel.
DeSantis.
Emma whispered:
“He wanted both of us dead.”
Luca did not react to the word us.
Not yet.
Vittorio continued.
Antonio survived the crash.
So did Luca.
That ruined DeSantis’s plan.
Lily’s disappearance created a second opportunity.
Declare her dead.
Leave Luca as sole heir.
Then manipulate transfers through guardianship until Luca reached full control.
Marco looked sick.
“How much did DeSantis move?”
Vittorio answered:
“More than anyone knew.”
Enzo looked at him.
“You knew enough.”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing.”
Vittorio’s jaw tightened.
“I spent twenty years undoing what I could without triggering the trust review.”
Emma laughed in disbelief.
“So everyone kept protecting the system.”
Silence.
That was exactly what they had done.
Luca took the letter.
One final line sat at the bottom.
IF LILY RETURNS, TRUST NO ONE WHO ASKS HER TO SIGN BEFORE SHE SEES THE ORIGINAL LEDGER.
Luca looked up.
“Original ledger.”
Vittorio went pale.
Enzo looked toward the basement.
Marco understood.
The archive vault.
The one Enzo had opened.
Luca stood.
“Show me.”
Vittorio said nothing.
Luca’s voice lowered.
“What is in the original ledger?”
Vittorio finally answered.
“The names of everyone who bought Moretti assets after your sister was declared dead.”
Belini stopped breathing.
Emma saw it.
“Your family is in it.”
May you like
Belini closed her eyes.
Vittorio did not deny it.
