Chapter 5 - The Ledger Under the Estate

The archive vault sat beneath three locked levels of the estate.
Old stone.
Steel doors.
No network connection.
Antonio Moretti had built it before Luca was born.
Enzo still knew the mechanical override.
That explained the impossible access.
Not magic.
Memory.
Inside the vault were paper ledgers, deeds, trust agreements, photographs, and sealed boxes.
Luca looked around.
“My father kept all this.”
Enzo nodded.
“He trusted paper more than people.”
Reasonable.
Vittorio led them to a black cabinet.
Inside was the original succession ledger.
Emma watched Luca open it.
Her name was there.
Lily Moretti.
Born nineteen years after Luca.
Equal beneficiary.
Alive status had been manually crossed out after the crash.
But beneath the alteration was a note.
PENDING BODY CONFIRMATION.
No body had ever existed.
Marco turned pages.
Transfers began six months later.
Warehouses.
Port rights.
Commercial land.
Private equity positions.
Some went to legitimate Moretti subsidiaries.
Others went to companies nobody recognized.
Vittorio did.
“DeSantis vehicles.”
Belini looked at another page.
Her face changed.
One company carried the Bellini family name.
Emma saw.
“So your family did benefit.”
Vittorio nodded.
“Yes.”
Belini stared at him.
“You told me we were protecting Luca.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
“From learning how your grandfather made our money.”
Silence.
Belini looked physically ill.
Vittorio continued.
His own father had purchased distressed Moretti properties through DeSantis after Lily was declared dead.
Cheap.
Legal on paper.
Fraudulent if Lily had been alive.
Emma looked at Belini.
“That is why you were afraid.”
Belini swallowed.
“If you are Lily, half my family’s wealth may come from transfers that should never have happened.”
Luca’s expression did not soften.
“So you planted a ring on her.”
Belini looked ashamed now.
Finally.
“Yes.”
Emma expected satisfaction.
She felt none.
Marco turned another page.
“Boss.”
A symbol appeared beside certain transfers.
Black triangle.
Enzo recognized it.
“Emergency buyer.”
“What does that mean?”
“Someone outside the family who financed DeSantis.”
Luca frowned.
“Who?”
Vittorio looked at the page.
“I never knew.”
Emma studied the entries.
Same triangle.
Same dates.
Same holding company initials.
R.A.C.
Luca knew the initials.
“Rinaldi Asset Consortium.”
Marco stared.
“That company still exists.”
Moretti competitor.
Not Mafia rival exactly.
Worse.
Institutional money with clean hands and dirty patience.
DeSantis had not acted alone.
He had been selling Moretti control piece by piece to an outside consortium.
Luca looked at Enzo.
“Did my father know?”
“Near the end.”
“Why didn’t he expose it?”
“He was dying.”
Silence.
Antonio had spent his final years trying to recover assets without destabilizing the family.
And hiding one final weapon.
Lily.
Emma hated that word.
Weapon.
She looked at Luca.
“I’m not signing anything.”
He nodded immediately.
“Good.”
Vittorio looked surprised.
Luca turned.
“My father’s letter said the same thing.”
Emma’s chest tightened slightly.
Then Marco found a second folder inside the cabinet.
Modern.
Created four months earlier.
Someone had recently accessed the old ledger.
Emma looked at Enzo.
“You?”
“No.”
Vittorio?
“No.”
Belini shook her head.
Marco checked the access seal.
Antonio Moretti — Patriarch Access.
The same credential that authorized Emma’s employment.
Luca’s expression hardened.
“So whoever hired Emma also came down here.”
Enzo looked confused.
“I used the patriarch access to authorize her employment.”
Everyone turned.
Emma stared.
“You hired me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I found your application in Belini’s rejection queue.”
Belini looked away.
Enzo continued.
“I needed Luca to see you.”
“You could have called him.”
“No.”
Luca’s gaze sharpened.
“Why?”
Enzo looked toward the ledger.
“Because I no longer knew who around you I could trust.”
Fair.
But not enough.
Marco tapped the modern folder.
“This wasn’t Enzo.”
“How do you know?”
“Different authentication time.”
The ledger had been accessed two days before Enzo used the credential.
Someone else still had patriarch access.
Someone besides Enzo.
Luca looked at Vittorio.
“Who else did my father authorize?”
Vittorio slowly turned toward the oldest cabinet.
“One person.”
Enzo’s face changed.
“No.”
Luca heard it.
“Who?”
Vittorio whispered:
“Your mother.”
The room went still.
Lucia Moretti had died in the crash twenty years ago.
Unlike Lily, her body had supposedly been recovered.
Marco looked at Luca.
“We need the death file.”
Luca stared at the access log.
May you like
For the second time that night, a dead Moretti credential had opened a door.
And this one belonged to his mother.
