Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Ghost

(The Total Collapse of the Vance Syndicate)

The scene inside the executive boardroom transformed into absolute, chaotic pandemonium.

Federal marshals moved in with practiced, ruthless precision.

Garrett Vance was slammed face-down onto the mahogany conference table, his arms violently twisted behind his back as heavy steel handcuffs snapped into place around his wrists. He sobbed uncontrollably, his tears mixing with the spilled blue ink on the forged deed.

"Rosalind! Please!" Garrett cried out, his cheek pressed flat against the wood. "I loved you! My father forced me to do it! He threatened to cut me out of the family trust! Forgive me, Rosalind!"

I stood over him, looking down at the man who had kissed my forehead while calculating the milliliters of poison in my cup.

"I forgave you the moment I woke up in the river, Garrett," I whispered softly into his ear. "Because forgiving you allowed me to destroy you without a single drop of hesitation."

Harrison Vance was handcuffed next. The old patriarch stood rigid, his face purple with rage, refusing to look at Tobias as he was read his federal Miranda rights for maritime arms trafficking, murder, and racketeering.

Penelope was helped to her feet by a female federal agent, her designer dress ruined, her diamonds confiscated as evidence of corporate embezzlement. She wept hysterically, shielding her face from the flashing press cameras that had gathered in the corridor.

Corrupt Judge Arthur Harrison was stripped of his judicial credentials on the spot, escorted out under federal custody.

As the conspirators were marched down the private elevator corridor toward the waiting police cruisers below, Tobias and I walked over to the panoramic glass windows.

Looking out over the harbor, the afternoon sun broke through the storm clouds, illuminating the massive steel cranes of Vanguard Shipyards.

Down in the harbor, the sirens of three Coast Guard tactical cutters echoed across the water as they boarded and seized The Black Star, confiscating the ninety-million-dollar illegal weapons shipment and securing the safety of the port.
