Chapter 9 - The Diver’s Discovery

The entire boardroom froze.

Garrett’s gold pen stopped mid-stroke, snapping in half under his sudden, convulsive grip. Blue ink bled across the crisp white paper, staining the ninety-million-dollar deed.

Every corporate attorney, foreign buyer, and corrupt judge at the table turned their heads in slow, paralyzed horror toward the doorway.

Walking into the boardroom with slow, majestic, and absolute grace, dressed in an exquisite black silk pantsuit, her dark hair falling elegantly over her shoulders, her eyes blazing with diamond-hard fury...

Was Rosalind Sterling.

And walking tall at her side, moving with the imposing, athletic power of a seasoned tactical operative, carrying a heavy titanium case...

Was Tobias Sterling.

Penelope let out a blood-curdling, hysterical shriek, knocking her chair backward, crashing onto the marble floor, clutching her belly in pure, unadulterated terror.

"Ghosts...!" Penelope screamed, scrambling backward against the wall. "Garrett! The river! They drowned! You told me they drowned!"

Garrett shot out of his chair, staggering backward until his spine slammed into the glass window. His face was entirely drained of color, his eyes bulging, his chest heaving as if the river water had suddenly filled his own lungs.

"No..." Garrett choked out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, sniveling rasp. "No! This is impossible! The seatbelt was wired! The doors were locked! You were at the bottom of the river!"

"You should have used stronger wire, Garrett," I said, stepping slowly toward the table, my heels clicking with rhythmic, terrifying finality against the marble. "And you should have checked on my brother before you left us to die."

Harrison Vance was the only one who didn't scream. The old patriarch rose slowly to his feet, his cold gray eyes narrowing into two slits of lethal fury.

"Tobias Sterling," Harrison hissed, looking at my brother standing tall on both feet. "You spent fifteen years faking paralysis."

"I spent fifteen years staying alive, Harrison," Tobias replied, his baritone voice vibrating through the boardroom. "Waiting for the day your arrogant family walked into the open."
