Chapter 6 - Penelope’s Web of Deceit

At 1:15 PM, forty-five minutes before the probate reading, Penelope Vance sat inside the penthouse suite of the Four Seasons Hotel on the Baltimore waterfront, admiring herself in the full-length gilded mirror.

She wore a bespoke black designer dress that accentuated her pregnant figure, adjusting a diamond necklace that had belonged to my mother—a family heirloom she had stolen from our estate safe while the divers were searching the river.

Her phone chimed on the marble vanity.

Penelope picked it up, glancing at the encrypted text message from an international number:

UNKNOWN (1:12 PM): The offshore account in Zurich is confirmed. Wire the $15M deposit immediately after the deed signature, or Harrison Vance will learn who really fathered your child.

Penelope’s hands trembled slightly as she deleted the message.

What Penelope didn't know was that every keystroke, every deleted text, and every banking transaction on her phone was being mirrored in real time onto the tactical terminal inside our surveillance van.

"Look at this, Rosalind," Tobias called out from the server console.

I leaned over his shoulder, reading the decrypted telecommunications logs extracted from Penelope’s device.

"She’s blackmailing Garrett's father," I said, reading the intercepted emails in shock. "The child she is carrying isn't Garrett's."

"Whose is it?"

"Julian Sterling—our distant second cousin who runs an offshore hedge fund in London," I read aloud. "Penelope was sleeping with Julian while stringing Garrett along. She’s playing both sides of the Vance family, planning to wire forty million dollars to an untraceable account in Switzerland the second the drydock deal closes, leaving Garrett to take the federal fall for the arms smuggling!"

"Poetic justice," Tobias chuckled darkly. "A nest of vipers biting each other in the dark."

"Let's make sure the venom hits every single one of them," I said, strapping a concealed digital body camera beneath the lapel of my tailored black overcoat.

"Rosalind," Tobias said, standing up and handing me a sealed manila envelope containing the certified Vanguard Bloodline Trust Covenant. "Are you ready for this?"

May you like

I took the envelope, feeling the heavy, cold weight of my father’s legacy in my hands.

"I’ve been ready for fifteen years, Tobias," I said. "Let's go take back our kingdom."
