Chapter 2 - The Letter Written Before Lily Was Born

Nobody moved while Luca held the envelope.
Lily was still against his chest.
Her small hand remained closed around Elena Moretti’s gold button.
Belini stood near the staircase.
Too pale.
Too quiet.
That was the part Luca noticed first.
He looked at Bruno.
“Who touched the trunk after you found it?”
“Only me and Dante.”
“Where was it?”
“In the Vescari storage room behind the old wine vault.”
Belini found her voice.
“That room belongs to both families.”
“No,” Luca said.
“It belongs to my estate.”
He broke the seal.
Emma expected pages.
There was only one folded sheet.
The handwriting was old-fashioned and precise.
Luca read silently at first.
Then his expression changed.
“Read it,” Emma whispered.
He looked at Lily.
Then he did.
“To my son’s first child. If you are holding this, someone has already tried to convince your father that your existence is dangerous.”
Belini closed her eyes.
Luca continued.
“The Vescari alliance was never created to protect the Moretti family. It was created to control the next Moretti heir.”
Silence.
Dante slowly turned toward Belini.
She shook her head.
“I’ve never seen that letter.”
Luca kept reading.
“If Vittorio is still alive, trust him only after he tells you the truth about the debt. If he is dead, find the coat this button came from. The proof is sewn inside the lining.”
Emma looked at Lily’s hand.
The button.
The coat.
The missing trunk.
None of it had been an accident.
Luca lowered the letter.
“Bruno.”
“Yes, boss?”
“The coat.”
Bruno swallowed.
“It’s in the trunk.”
Belini moved.
Only one step.
Dante blocked her without touching her.
Luca noticed.
“Why did you move?”
“I didn’t.”
“You did.”
Belini’s eyes hardened.
“You’re building a conspiracy around a dead woman’s letter.”
“My mother.”
“A dead woman,” Belini repeated. “Who wrote something twenty-two years ago about a child who didn’t exist.”
Emma stared at her.
Then at the letter.
“She didn’t know Lily.”
“No,” Luca said.
His gaze went back to the page.
“She knew someone would come.”
He unfolded the bottom corner.
There was one final line.
Not addressed to the child.
Addressed to him.
“Luca—if the Vescari family ever tells you your heir is the reason the alliance must survive, understand this: your heir is the reason it must end.”
Luca went completely still.
Belini whispered, “That proves nothing.”
Luca looked at Dante.
“Bring me the coat.”
Bruno disappeared down the corridor.
Emma touched Lily’s back.
“She found that button beneath the staircase.”
Luca nodded.
“Meaning someone opened the trunk inside this house.”
Belini’s mouth tightened.
Dante said, “Or moved the coat.”
Luca looked at Belini.
She laughed once.
“You cannot seriously think I carried a twenty-year-old coat through the foyer.”
“No,” Luca said.
“I think someone did it for you.”
That silenced her.
Bruno returned carrying a black garment box.
He placed it on the console table.
Inside lay an elegant dark coat, carefully folded.
One button was missing.
Lily opened her hand.
The empty space matched perfectly.
Emma felt cold.
Luca lifted the coat.
The lining looked untouched.
Almost.
Near the inside hem, one seam had been opened and sewn shut again by hand.
Not professionally.
Recently.
Dante noticed too.
“Boss.”
“I see it.”
Luca reached for a small letter opener from the table.
Belini stepped forward.
“Don’t.”
Everyone turned.
She realized what she had said.
Too late.
Luca’s eyes became unreadable.
“Why?”
Belini’s lips parted.
No answer came.
Luca cut the thread.
Something thin slid from the lining and landed on the marble.
A brass key.
And a narrow strip of paper.
Dante picked up the paper.
Three numbers were written across it.
3 — 17 — 9
Emma frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Bruno went white.
Luca saw it.
“You know.”
The old butler nodded slowly.
“Your mother’s private archive had numbered cabinets.”
“Which cabinet?”
Bruno looked at the numbers again.
“Room three. Cabinet seventeen. Drawer nine.”
Belini backed away.
This time everyone saw it.
Luca handed Lily carefully to Emma.
Then he closed his fingers around the brass key.
“Seal the archive.”
Dante nodded.
Belini spoke quickly.
“Luca, whatever is in there, you should think about what opening it could do to the families.”
He looked at her.
“That sentence tells me more than the letter did.”
Her face changed.
Luca turned toward the west corridor.
“Come with me.”
Emma blinked.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
His gaze dropped to Lily.
“Because apparently my mother left this for all three of us.”
May you like
And behind them, for the first time since the gates closed, Belini stopped pretending she wanted to leave.
She looked terrified of what they were about to find.
