Chapter 8 - The Fire Vittorio Prepared For

The fire never reached the library.

That was the first good thing.

The second was that Elena had never trusted one hiding place.

By the time the flames were contained, the original archive room was blackened.

Cabinet seventeen was ruined.

The cassette recorder melted.

The first ledger burned.

Emma stood in the courtyard with Lily under a blanket.

Luca watched firefighters move through the west wing.

His face revealed nothing.

Belini stood beside Dante.

Vincent remained outside the gates.

He had not been allowed in.

Thomas Calder was under guard.

Bruno looked twenty years older.

Dante approached Luca.

“We lost the archive copy.”

Luca nodded.

“But not the storage copy.”

“No.”

“And the notarized statement?”

“Safe.”

Belini exhaled.

Luca heard it.

He looked at her.

“Relieved?”

“That your daughter’s evidence survived?”

“Yes.”

For once, there was no sarcasm.

Emma watched her carefully.

Belini looked frightened.

But not of Luca.

Of her father.

A phone rang.

Belini’s.

She stared at the screen.

Vincent.

Luca held out his hand.

She hesitated.

Then gave it to him.

He answered.

Vincent spoke first.

“You should have let the past stay buried.”

Luca’s eyes turned cold.

“You set fire to my house.”

“No.”

“You ordered Thomas.”

“I ordered nothing.”

“Then come inside and say that.”

Vincent laughed.

“You think I’m stupid?”

“No.”

A pause.

“I think you’re cornered.”

Vincent’s tone changed.

“Your mother’s evidence implicates Moretti accounts too.”

“I know.”

“If you release it, your companies fall with mine.”

“Maybe.”

Emma looked at Luca.

Belini did too.

Vincent said, “You would destroy your own family for a maid’s child?”

Luca’s expression hardened.

“My daughter.”

Silence on the line.

Then Vincent said something softer.

“That is exactly what Vittorio was afraid you would say.”

The call ended.

Emma stepped closer.

“What did he mean?”

Luca looked at Thomas.

The house manager had heard.

He lowered his eyes.

“Tell me,” Luca said.

Thomas swallowed.

“Your father believed that if you acknowledged Lily publicly, Vincent would expose everything.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Thomas looked at him.

“You know the business risk.”

“What else?”

Thomas’s gaze moved to Emma.

Then Lily.

“He threatened them.”

Emma went cold.

Luca’s face became unreadable.

“Specifically?”

Thomas nodded.

“Vittorio believed Vincent would have Emma and the child watched. Followed. Pressured. Maybe worse.”

Emma held Lily tighter.

Luca’s voice became low.

“So my father hid them.”

“Yes.”

“And signed the alliance.”

“Yes.”

“To buy time.”

Thomas nodded.

“That was his plan.”

Belini whispered, “Until he recruited me.”

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“Vittorio wanted the ledgers out of Vescari control before he died. He gave me access to accounts and asked me to move the final funds.”

Dante said, “The transfers with your signature.”

“Yes.”

“Where did the money go?”

Belini looked at Luca.

“An escrow account.”

“For what?”

“Restitution.”

Emma frowned.

Belini explained.

“Vittorio calculated how much Vescari-controlled transfers had improperly moved through Moretti entities. He wanted the money separated so it could be returned if the records ever became public.”

Luca stared.

“My father built a settlement fund.”

“Yes.”

“Without telling me.”

“He didn’t trust himself to survive long enough.”

Bruno closed his eyes.

That sounded like Vittorio.

Dante checked Belini’s account information.

“Where is the escrow?”

She gave him the number.

He typed.

Then stared.

“It’s there.”

“How much?” Luca asked.

Dante told him.

Emma did not understand the number.

Only the silence after it.

Luca looked at Belini.

“So you were helping my father.”

“Yes.”

“And terrorizing Emma.”

Belini’s face tightened.

“I was trying to force her out before Vincent realized Lily was in this house.”

Emma stared.

“You threatened my father’s treatment.”

“I never touched it.”

“You threatened my sister’s tuition.”

“I never touched that either.”

“That doesn’t make it acceptable.”

“No.”

Belini’s answer was quiet.

That surprised Emma more than an argument would have.

Luca looked toward the gates.

Vincent’s cars were still there.

“He thinks the archive burned.”

Dante nodded.

“Good.”

Emma understood.

“You want him to believe the evidence is gone.”

“Yes.”

Belini looked at him.

“To do what?”

Luca’s gaze hardened.

“To make him careless.”

Thomas shifted under guard.

Luca noticed.

“So will you.”

Thomas went pale.

Dante frowned.

“Boss?”

Luca looked at the house manager.

“Vincent trusts you.”

Thomas said nothing.

“You’re going to tell him the storage copy burned too.”

Thomas shook his head.

“He’ll know I’m lying.”

“No.”

Luca looked at Belini.

“Because she’ll confirm it.”

Belini stared.

“You want me to call my father.”

“Yes.”

“And tell him everything is gone.”

“Yes.”

“What happens after that?”

Luca looked at Lily asleep against Emma.

Then at Elena’s surviving ledger.

“He tells us what he’s been hiding for twenty-two years.”

Belini gave a humorless smile.

“My father does not confess.”

Luca looked toward the gate.

“No.”

“He negotiates.”

Emma saw it then.

The trap.

Not built with threats.

Built with relief.

Let Vincent believe he had won.

Then see what he tried to buy with his victory.

Luca handed Belini her phone.

“Call him.”

She looked at Emma.

Then Lily.

May you like

Then Luca.

And pressed the button.
