Chapter 6 - What Belini Was Really Protecting

They returned to the estate before sunrise.
Nobody slept.
Luca took the library.
Emma took the chair beside the fireplace with Lily asleep across her lap.
Belini sat opposite them.
No red gown now.
No arrogance.
Only calculation.
Luca placed both ledgers on the table.
“Start talking.”
Belini looked at Dante.
“Remove the guards.”
“No.”
“Then I say nothing.”
Luca leaned back.
“You are confusing negotiation with choice.”
Her jaw tightened.
Emma watched her hands.
They were steady.
Belini had decided the truth was less dangerous than silence.
“My father inherited the arrangement from his father,” she said.
Luca frowned.
“Elena dealt with Vincent.”
“Yes. But Vincent didn’t start it.”
“Who did?”
“Your grandfather.”
The room changed.
Luca did not.
“Explain.”
“The Vescari accounts were not initially theft. Your grandfather used our banks to move money the Moretti family did not want traced.”
Dante said nothing.
Neither did Bruno.
That silence told Emma enough.
Belini continued.
“Elena discovered it years later. By then Vincent had expanded it. He used Moretti companies for his own transactions.”
“So my mother found both families compromised.”
“Yes.”
“And Vincent threatened to expose all of it if she went public.”
“Yes.”
“Then she died.”
Belini looked away.
“I don’t know what happened to her.”
Luca’s voice sharpened.
“Do not lie now.”
“I’m not.”
Emma believed that part.
Belini was frightened of the past.
Not defensive.
Luca asked, “What protection did the alliance provide?”
Belini looked at the ledgers.
“Mutual silence.”
“The marriage?”
“A permanent bond. If the families merged through us, neither side could expose the other without destroying itself.”
Dante tapped clause seven.
“And the heir?”
Belini’s eyes went to Lily.
“That was my father’s condition.”
“Why?”
“Because if Luca already had an heir, the marriage would not control succession.”
Emma finally understood.
“You weren’t supposed to become Luca’s wife.”
Belini looked at her.
“I was supposed to become the mother of the next Moretti heir.”
Silence.
The sentence was worse than Emma expected.
Luca’s face became cold.
“So Lily made you unnecessary.”
“Yes.”
“And dangerous?”
“To my family.”
Emma’s arms tightened around her daughter.
Belini saw it.
“I never intended to hurt her.”
“You tried to throw her out.”
“I wanted her gone.”
“That is not better.”
Belini looked at Luca.
“You think I had a choice?”
“Yes.”
The answer came instantly.
Belini flinched.
Luca continued.
“You had the same choice Emma had every day for three years. Protect yourself or protect a child.”
Belini’s eyes hardened.
“You don’t know what my father does to people who ruin his plans.”
Emma looked at her.
“Then why are you still protecting him?”
Belini did not answer.
Dante entered carrying a folder.
“Boss.”
Luca took it.
“What?”
“We traced the final ledger transfers.”
Belini went still.
Dante looked directly at her.
“They weren’t authorized by Vincent.”
Luca frowned.
“Who?”
Dante placed the page down.
A signature.
Belini Vescari.
Emma stared.
Belini closed her eyes.
Luca’s voice became almost gentle.
“You said you weren’t protecting the marriage.”
Belini opened her eyes.
“I wasn’t.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
“No.”
“The transfers are yours.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Belini looked at Lily.
Then Emma.
Finally Luca.
“Because my father stopped trusting me two years ago.”
No one spoke.
She continued.
“He told me if the alliance failed, I would be blamed for every account.”
Dante said, “So you moved the money.”
“I moved it out.”
Luca frowned.
“Out where?”
Belini gave a humorless smile.
“Somewhere my father couldn’t reach.”
Emma looked at Dante.
He was already checking.
Belini continued.
“I wasn’t stealing from the Morettis.”
“Then what were you doing?”
“Building evidence.”
Luca stared.
“Against your father?”
“Yes.”
That was the first answer that surprised everyone.
Belini leaned forward.
“I knew about Lily because Vittorio told me.”
Emma froze.
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“Why would he tell you?”
“Because he needed someone inside the Vescari family.”
Luca’s expression changed.
“My father recruited you?”
Belini nodded.
“He told me the alliance was a trap. He said he intended to destroy it from inside.”
Emma looked at the sealed statement.
“Then why did you threaten me?”
Belini’s face tightened.
“Because after Vittorio died, I lost the only person who knew what I was doing.”
“You could have told Luca.”
“No.”
“Why?”
Belini looked at him.
“Because I didn’t know whether he was like his father.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“That is not an answer.”
Belini shook her head.
“No. It’s the only answer that matters.”
She looked at Emma.
“I wanted Lily outside the estate before my father learned she had been found.”
Emma went still.
“Found?”
Belini nodded.
“He didn’t know she was here.”
Luca’s head turned toward Dante.
“Who informed Vincent?”
Dante looked at his phone.
Then at the security feed.
His expression changed.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“The east gate just opened.”
Luca stood.
“Who authorized it?”
Dante swallowed.
“Bruno’s code.”
Everyone turned.
The old butler stared back in disbelief.
“I didn’t.”
Then headlights swept across the library windows.
Three black cars entered the courtyard.
Belini closed her eyes.
“My father.”
Luca looked at the doors.
“How did he know?”
May you like
Belini whispered the answer.
“Because somebody inside this house has been reporting to him for years.”
