Chapter 9 - The Bargain Vincent Made Too Quickly

Vincent entered the estate at sunrise.

Alone.

That was Luca’s condition.

He walked into the damaged west wing and stopped when he saw the smoke-stained walls.

Belini stood beside the fireplace.

Thomas remained under guard.

Emma sat with Lily near the windows.

Luca waited at the center of the room.

No ledgers were visible.

No legal statement.

No photographs.

Vincent smiled.

“You finally understand.”

Luca said nothing.

Vincent looked at Belini.

“You’re coming home.”

“No.”

The answer surprised him.

Belini’s father turned slowly.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

His expression changed.

Luca noticed.

So did Emma.

Vincent looked back at Luca.

“You’ve filled her head with nonsense.”

“No,” Belini said. “Vittorio did that years ago.”

Silence.

Vincent’s face became still.

There.

The first mistake.

Luca spoke.

“So you knew.”

Vincent recovered.

“Knew what?”

“That my father recruited her.”

Vincent looked at Thomas.

The house manager looked away.

Vincent understood.

“Careless.”

Thomas said nothing.

Luca stepped closer.

“The archive burned.”

Vincent’s mouth relaxed almost imperceptibly.

Relief.

Emma saw it.

Luca did too.

“The storage box?” Vincent asked.

There.

Too quickly.

He knew.

Luca’s expression did not change.

“Burned.”

Vincent exhaled.

Then smiled.

“I’m sorry for the loss.”

Luca watched him.

“What do you want?”

“The alliance ends quietly.”

Belini stared.

Vincent continued.

“No marriage. No scandal. We dissolve the remaining joint interests.”

“And Lily?”

Vincent’s gaze moved to the child.

Emma hated how calmly he looked at her.

“She is acknowledged privately.”

Luca’s voice sharpened.

“Privately?”

“For her protection.”

Emma almost laughed.

The same word.

Protection.

Always meaning control.

Luca said, “And publicly?”

“You remain without an heir until the corporate separation is complete.”

Belini closed her eyes.

He had said it.

Exactly what Elena predicted.

Luca asked, “Why does that matter if the evidence is gone?”

Vincent paused.

Only half a second.

Enough.

Luca smiled without warmth.

“It matters because the alliance clause still protects something.”

Vincent said nothing.

Dante entered quietly.

Carrying one folder.

Vincent’s face changed.

Luca continued.

“The alliance wasn’t just about mutual silence.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Vincent looked at Belini.

She did not help him.

Finally:

“Voting control.”

Emma frowned.

Luca did not.

He had already understood.

Vincent continued.

“Vescari trusts hold convertible interests in three Moretti subsidiaries. If the marriage occurred without a prior acknowledged heir, those interests would consolidate under the marital structure.”

Dante placed the folder down.

“And if an heir existed?”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“They revert.”

“To whom?” Luca asked.

Vincent looked at Lily.

That was answer enough.

Emma’s breath caught.

Luca opened the folder.

Dante had found the corporate trust.

Elena’s name appeared on the original documents.

Then Vittorio’s.

Then one beneficiary class.

First lineal descendant of Luca Moretti.

Lily.

Belini whispered, “My father wasn’t protecting the family.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You know nothing about what I protected.”

“You were trying to steal control.”

“I was preventing Moretti collapse.”

“By making me marry Luca?”

“By stabilizing both families.”

Luca’s voice cut through.

“Through my child’s inheritance.”

Vincent’s composure finally cracked.

“Your child did not exist when the structure was created.”

“No.”

Luca looked at Lily.

“But my mother planned for her.”

Vincent stared.

That was when Dante opened the second door.

Two federal attorneys entered.

Not police.

Not agents.

Attorneys.

One carried a sealed evidence case.

Vincent’s face emptied.

Luca said, “The storage copy did not burn.”

Belini watched her father realize it.

The ledgers.

The notarized statement.

The escrow fund.

The trust.

All preserved.

Vincent looked at Thomas.

“You.”

Thomas shook his head.

“No.”

Belini said, “Me.”

Her father turned.

She held his gaze.

“I gave them the escrow records.”

Vincent looked older.

Not weaker.

Older.

Luca stepped aside.

The attorneys moved forward.

Vincent did not resist.

He looked once at Lily.

Then at Emma.

“You have no idea what that child inherits.”

Emma stood.

“Yes.”

Vincent paused.

Emma’s voice remained calm.

“She inherits people who finally stopped being afraid of you.”

Nobody spoke.

Vincent was escorted from the room.

Thomas followed under separate guard.

The front doors closed.

The house became quiet.

Luca looked at Belini.

“Our engagement is over.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

“You leave the estate today.”

Another nod.

Then Belini looked at Emma.

For the first time, there was no contempt.

Only exhaustion.

“I was cruel to you.”

Emma said nothing.

“I told myself it was necessary.”

Still nothing.

Belini swallowed.

“It wasn’t.”

Emma looked at Lily.

Then back at her.

“No.”

“It wasn’t.”

Belini left without another word.

Luca stood in the center of the damaged room.

Dante handed him the trust documents.

“Boss.”

Luca looked at the beneficiary line.

Then at Lily.

May you like

For the first time, the question was no longer whether she belonged to the Moretti family.

The question was what Luca would do now that everyone knew she did.
