Chapter 3 - The Drawer Vittorio Never Opened

The archive smelled like cedar and dust.
Luca unlocked the third room himself.
Dante entered first.
Emma followed with Lily in her arms.
Belini was not allowed inside.
That had been Luca’s decision.
She had objected.
Once.
Then Dante had closed the door.
Cabinet seventeen stood behind an old desk.
Drawer nine had no handle.
Only a keyhole.
Luca inserted the brass key.
It turned.
Inside was a ledger.
A photograph.
And a sealed legal packet.
Emma looked at the photograph first.
Elena Moretti stood beside a younger Vittorio.
Between them was another man.
Vincent Vescari.
Belini’s father.
All three looked young.
All three looked unhappy.
Luca picked up the ledger.
The first pages contained shipping numbers.
Accounts.
Property transfers.
Then a repeated phrase.
Emergency family loan.
Dante leaned closer.
“Vescari money?”
“Looks like it.”
Luca turned another page.
The amounts increased.
Then stopped.
One final entry had been circled in red.
Beside it Elena had written:
Paid in full. Never let them claim otherwise.
Emma understood before anyone said it.
“The alliance.”
Luca looked at the legal packet.
“Was built on a debt.”
Dante opened the outer cover.
The document inside was signed four years ago.
Vittorio Moretti.
Vincent Vescari.
The same alliance agreement they had already found.
But this copy contained handwritten notes in the margins.
Vittorio’s handwriting.
Luca recognized it immediately.
Clause seven had been marked twice.
The clause concerning an acknowledged heir.
Beside it Vittorio had written:
Invalid if Elena’s ledger survives.
Luca’s jaw hardened.
Emma looked at him.
“Your father knew the debt had already been paid.”
“Yes.”
“Then why sign the agreement?”
A voice came from the doorway.
“Because they threatened you.”
Everyone turned.
Bruno stood there.
Luca’s face changed.
“Explain.”
The butler stepped inside.
“After Donna Elena died, Mr. Vescari came to this house. He told your father there were documents that could destroy Moretti Maritime.”
“What documents?”
“I never saw them.”
“Then what did they threaten?”
Bruno looked at Lily.
“Your future children.”
Emma tightened her hold.
Luca’s voice became quieter.
“What does that mean?”
“Your mother discovered that the Vescari family had been moving money through Moretti accounts without authorization. She copied everything. When she confronted Vincent, he told her the families were already too connected to separate.”
Dante frowned.
“That still doesn’t explain the heir clause.”
Bruno shook his head.
“No. That came later.”
“When?”
“After Emma became pregnant.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Luca turned toward her.
“You knew?”
Bruno looked ashamed.
“I knew there was a child. Not who the mother was.”
Emma whispered, “Vittorio came to the hospital.”
Bruno nodded.
“He returned that night and told me the alliance terms had changed.”
Luca stepped closer.
“My father signed clause seven after Lily was conceived?”
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
Emma’s stomach dropped.
“Then he didn’t hide Lily because the clause already existed.”
“No,” Luca said.
“He hid her because he knew they were going to create it.”
Dante looked down at the agreement.
“Which means Vincent knew there was an heir before the agreement was signed.”
Emma thought of Belini upstairs.
Her threats.
Her certainty.
Her fear when Lily appeared.
“She knew too.”
Luca did not answer.
He turned to the photograph.
Something was written on the back.
A date.
Twenty-two years ago.
The week before Elena Moretti died.
Under the date were six words.
If I disappear, Vincent did not win.
Luca stared at them.
Emma saw his hand tighten.
Not shake.
Tighten.
He looked at Bruno.
“How did my mother die?”
The old man closed his eyes.
“Officially?”
Luca’s voice dropped.
“I didn’t ask for officially.”
Bruno opened his eyes.
“Her car left the road during a storm.”
“I know.”
“She had been trying to reach a federal investigator.”
Dante looked up.
“About the Vescari accounts?”
Bruno nodded.
Luca became perfectly still.
“Was my father aware?”
“Yes.”
“And he still signed an alliance with Vincent?”
“Years later.”
“Why?”
Bruno looked at the legal packet.
“Because Vincent had one thing your father valued more than revenge.”
Luca waited.
Bruno looked at Lily.
“Time.”
Emma frowned.
Bruno continued.
“He told Vittorio that if the Morettis publicly challenged the Vescari family, every hidden transaction would be exposed as if both families had created them together. Your father believed he could keep the peace long enough to find Elena’s original ledger.”
Luca held it up.
“This ledger.”
“Yes.”
“And he never found it.”
“No.”
Emma looked at the open drawer.
“But Elena made sure Luca would.”
Bruno nodded.
“Through his first child.”
Lily stirred against Emma’s shoulder.
Then pointed toward the desk.
“Red.”
Everyone looked.
A thin red ribbon protruded from beneath the drawer.
Dante crouched.
There was a second compartment.
He pulled it open.
Inside was a small cassette recorder.
And one label.
For Vittorio. If Vincent denies everything.
Luca picked it up.
Dante found an old player in the cabinet.
The tape clicked.
Static filled the archive.
Then Elena Moretti’s voice came through the speaker.
Calm.
Clear.
Alive across twenty-two years.
“Vittorio, if you are hearing this, Vincent Vescari already knows I copied the accounts.”
Luca stopped breathing.
May you like
The tape continued.
“And if anything happens to me, do not believe it was an accident.”
