Chapter 5 - The Storage Unit Vincent Never Wanted Opened

The storage facility sat beneath an old brick warehouse in Brooklyn.

No marble.

No chandeliers.

No guards in tailored suits.

Just concrete.

Fluorescent lights.

And Unit 9.

Luca stood in front of it with Lily asleep against his shoulder.

Emma had stopped trying to understand how quickly the child had accepted him.

Belini stood ten feet away between Dante and another guard.

She had changed from anger to silence.

That worried Emma more.

The manager handed Luca a key.

“Your father renewed this account every year.”

“Did he ever enter?”

“Never.”

“Anyone else?”

The man checked the log.

“Three attempted access requests.”

Dante looked up.

“Names?”

The manager hesitated.

“All denied.”

“Names.”

He swallowed.

“Vincent Vescari.”

Belini’s face changed.

Luca noticed.

“When?”

“Four years ago. Two years ago. And six months ago.”

Emma looked at Belini.

Six months.

Long after Vittorio died.

“Your father kept looking,” she said.

Belini said nothing.

Luca unlocked the unit.

Inside sat one steel box.

Nothing else.

No furniture.

No documents.

Only the box.

Dante checked it first.

Then Luca set Lily carefully into Emma’s arms.

On top of the box was a small plaque.

For the first Moretti child born after Luca.

Belini laughed.

It sounded wrong.

“This is absurd.”

Luca looked at her.

“You’ve said that a lot today.”

“Because this family has apparently built a religion around old boxes.”

Emma ignored her.

The box required two keys.

One keyhole on each side.

Dante frowned.

“We only have one.”

Emma looked at Lily’s button.

Then at Luca.

“The button.”

He understood.

He turned it over.

A narrow seam ran around the edge.

Luca pressed it.

The back opened.

Inside was a tiny flat key.

Belini inhaled.

Emma heard it.

Luca did too.

He inserted Elena’s brass key into one side.

The button key into the other.

The box opened.

Inside were three things.

A second ledger.

A notarized statement.

And a photograph of Vittorio Moretti holding newborn Lily.

Emma stopped breathing.

Luca stared.

“You said he visited.”

“He did.”

“You never said he held her.”

Emma’s voice became quiet.

“I didn’t think that mattered.”

“It matters.”

Lily slept between them.

Luca picked up the photograph.

Vittorio looked exhausted.

But he was smiling.

On the back he had written:

I am sorry, Luca. I chose fear and called it protection.

Luca did not move.

Emma watched pain pass through his face.

Fast.

Then gone.

Dante opened the notarized statement.

His eyes moved across the page.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“This was signed by Vittorio six days before he died.”

Luca took it.

He read.

Then read again.

Emma waited.

“What does it say?”

He looked at her.

“My father acknowledged Lily.”

Emma froze.

Belini stepped forward.

“That’s impossible.”

Dante blocked her.

Luca continued.

“Privately. Under seal.”

Emma’s heart hammered.

“Why?”

Luca read aloud.

“‘Lily Carter is the biological daughter and firstborn heir of Luca Moretti. I have concealed this fact under coercive pressure created by the Vescari alliance. If this statement is ever opened, the alliance is void.’”

Belini went white.

Luca looked at her.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“Your father did.”

“That doesn’t mean I did.”

Emma watched her.

Belini’s fear was real.

But not complete.

She still believed something could save her.

Dante opened the second ledger.

“Transfers match the first.”

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

He turned several pages.

“These continue for eighteen years after Elena died.”

Luca stared.

“So Vincent kept using our companies.”

“Through shell accounts.”

“Signed by who?”

Dante looked closer.

Then his expression changed.

“Not Vittorio.”

“Who?”

“Someone using his authorization codes.”

Emma felt cold.

“Belini?”

Dante shook his head.

“Too early. She would’ve been a child.”

Belini looked almost relieved.

Then Dante turned another page.

“The final transfers are recent.”

“How recent?”

“Last year.”

Luca looked at Belini again.

Her relief disappeared.

Dante continued.

“Approved through Vescari Family Office.”

Belini’s lips parted.

Emma saw the truth before Luca asked.

“You worked there.”

Belini said nothing.

Luca stepped closer.

“Did you approve these?”

“No.”

“Did you know about them?”

“No.”

“Did you know Lily existed?”

Silence.

Luca’s voice dropped.

“Answer carefully.”

Belini looked at Emma.

Then at Lily.

Finally:

“Yes.”

Emma went still.

Luca did not.

He stepped forward once.

Only once.

“When?”

Belini’s eyes filled with something that looked almost like hatred.

“Before she was born.”

Emma’s stomach twisted.

“You knew the whole time.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you pretend today was the first time?”

Belini laughed bitterly.

“Because the moment Luca acknowledged her, my family lost everything.”

Luca stared.

“What exactly do you lose?”

Belini looked at the ledgers.

Then at the sealed statement.

“Not the marriage.”

A pause.

“The protection.”

Dante frowned.

“Protection from what?”

May you like

Belini looked at her father’s name written across two decades of transactions.

“From what your mother found.”
