Chapter 10 - The Daughter No Agreement Could Erase

Three weeks later, the gates of the Moretti estate opened.

Not for a wedding.

For a press conference.

Emma hated the idea.

Luca knew that.

“You don’t have to stand beside me.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

She looked at Lily playing with Elena’s gold button at the breakfast table.

“Because hiding her is how this started.”

Luca said nothing.

That had become one of the things Emma understood about him.

Silence did not mean disagreement.

Sometimes it meant the truth had landed exactly where it needed to.

The investigation moved quickly.

The surviving ledgers were authenticated.

The escrow funds were frozen, then transferred into court supervision.

The Vescari corporate interests were suspended.

Vincent was charged with financial conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, and witness intimidation.

Thomas Calder agreed to cooperate.

In exchange, he gave investigators twenty-two years of names, codes, accounts, and private instructions.

Elena Moretti’s death was reopened.

No one promised Luca what the final conclusion would be.

He accepted that.

For now.

Belini gave a full statement.

She also surrendered every transfer record Vittorio had asked her to preserve.

It did not erase what she had done to Emma.

It did not erase the threats.

But it proved something important.

Belini had not been the architect.

She had been a participant who finally chose to stop participating.

The engagement contract was voided.

The alliance collapsed.

And the clause built around Luca having “no legally acknowledged heir” became useless the moment Vittorio’s notarized statement was unsealed.

Lily Moretti existed.

Legally.

Publicly.

Permanently.

The morning of the press conference, Luca found Emma near the staircase.

The same staircase where Belini had tried to send them away.

Emma noticed the symmetry.

“So,” she said, “this is where your family changes?”

Luca looked at her.

“No.”

She frowned.

He pointed toward Lily.

“That happened when she picked up a button.”

Emma smiled despite herself.

Luca had changed too.

Not dramatically.

He was still controlled.

Still feared.

Still the man whose silence could empty a room.

But now Lily climbed into his lap during meetings.

She pulled his silver chain when bored.

She called Dante “Uncle D.”

And once, during breakfast, she had put jam on Luca’s tattooed hand and announced that the wolf looked hungry.

Dante had laughed for nearly a minute.

Luca had not forgiven him.

Emma suspected he never would.

The press waited outside.

So did cameras.

Luca handed Emma a document.

“What is this?”

“Employment termination.”

Her face changed.

He almost smiled.

“You’re firing me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because the mother of my daughter is not cleaning my house.”

Emma crossed her arms.

“I liked the job.”

“You complained about the east wing every day.”

“It has too many rooms.”

“It still does.”

She looked at the second page.

A new position.

Director of the Elena Moretti Family Trust.

Emma stared.

“No.”

Luca blinked.

“No?”

“I don’t know anything about trusts.”

“You know what it means to protect someone without knowing who they are.”

She looked at him.

“That’s your qualification?”

“It’s the one my mother apparently cared about.”

Emma’s expression softened.

He continued.

“The trust funds scholarships, medical care, and employee family assistance.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“My father’s hospital bills.”

“Covered by the trust.”

“My sister’s tuition?”

“Same program.”

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

“You’re impossible.”

“I’ve been told.”

A small voice came from behind them.

“Daddy.”

Luca turned immediately.

Lily stood at the bottom step holding Elena’s coat.

Bruno had restored it.

One gold button was still missing.

Lily held that one separately.

She walked to Luca.

“Fix.”

He crouched.

“You want it back on the coat?”

She nodded.

Emma watched him take the button from her palm.

For twenty-two years it had been evidence.

A clue.

A key.

A warning.

Now it was only a button again.

Luca handed it to Bruno.

“Have it sewn back.”

Lily frowned.

“Mine.”

Luca looked at her.

Bruno waited.

Emma covered a smile.

Luca sighed.

“Apparently not.”

He gave the button back.

Lily beamed.

Then she reached for his hand.

Outside, cameras flashed through the windows.

Luca looked at Emma.

“Ready?”

“No.”

“Good.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It means you’re paying attention.”

They walked toward the doors together.

At the podium, Luca did not discuss every secret.

He did not romanticize Vittorio’s choices.

He did not excuse Elena’s death or Belini’s cruelty.

He said only what mattered.

“My daughter, Lily Moretti, was hidden because powerful people believed her existence threatened an agreement.”

The reporters went silent.

Luca continued.

“The agreement is gone.”

Emma stood just beyond the cameras.

Lily held her hand.

“And my daughter is not.”

That line appeared everywhere by noon.

But the part Emma remembered happened afterward.

Back inside.

No cameras.

No guards.

No business.

Lily ran across the foyer toward Luca.

He caught her without hesitation this time.

No awkward hands.

No uncertainty.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

Emma stopped beside them.

Luca looked at her.

“I lost three years.”

Emma’s smile faded.

“Yes.”

“I can’t recover them.”

“No.”

“But I can stop losing more.”

Emma studied him.

Not the Mafia boss.

Not the heir.

Not the man people feared.

Just Lily’s father.

“You start tomorrow,” she said.

His eyebrow lifted.

“Tomorrow?”

“Today you still have a press conference to survive.”

For the first time, Luca laughed.

Quietly.

Lily laughed because he did.

And in the marble foyer where someone had once tried to erase her before her father came downstairs, the first acknowledged Moretti heir sat safely in his arms.

Elena’s button gleamed in her tiny hand.

The alliance was finished.

The truth was public.

Vincent’s control was broken.

Vittorio’s mistake had been exposed.

Belini was gone.

And Lily Moretti no longer had to be hidden from anyone.

She had not destroyed the family.

May you like

She had forced it to become something worth inheriting.
