Chapter 4 - Elena’s Last Recording

Nobody interrupted the tape.
Not even Lily.
Elena’s voice filled the archive.
“I found transfers from Vescari-controlled companies into Moretti shipping accounts, then out again through charities and property trusts. Vittorio did not authorize them.”
Dante looked at Luca.
Money laundering.
The words did not need to be spoken.
Elena continued.
“Vincent says exposing him will destroy both families. He may be right. That is why I made two copies.”
Luca’s eyes sharpened.
Two.
“One is hidden with this recording. The second is outside the estate.”
Dante immediately looked at the ledger.
“This is only one copy.”
Emma whispered, “Where is the other?”
Elena answered from the tape.
“If our son ever has a child, the second copy belongs to that child. Not to Vittorio. Not to Luca. To the child.”
Luca looked at Lily.
Emma felt the room tilt.
The tape hissed.
“I know how men like Vincent think. They protect agreements. Names. Property. They will expect the next Moretti heir to become leverage.”
A pause.
Then Elena’s voice softened.
“My grandchild must never become anyone’s leverage.”
Luca closed his eyes briefly.
Emma looked away.
It felt too private.
But the tape continued.
“The location of the second copy is written in the coat lining, but not in words. Vittorio will understand the numbers.”
Luca looked at the strip.
3 — 17 — 9.
Dante frowned.
“But those numbers brought us here.”
Bruno shook his head.
“Maybe not only here.”
Luca stared at the strip.
Then he understood.
“My mother’s birthday.”
Emma looked at him.
“March seventeenth?”
“Yes.”
“And nine?”
Bruno answered.
“Elena and Vittorio were married at nine in the morning.”
Dante exhaled.
“So the numbers identify her.”
“Or something registered to her,” Luca said.
The tape clicked again.
“One more thing, Vittorio. If Vincent proposes marriage between our families, refuse him.”
Belini’s face appeared in Emma’s mind.
The engagement.
The alliance.
Clause seven.
Elena continued.
“He believes a marriage can erase what I found by binding the families so tightly that neither can accuse the other.”
Luca’s expression hardened.
“He planned it twenty-two years ago.”
Bruno nodded.
“Apparently.”
“Then my father knew exactly what the alliance was.”
“Yes.”
“And signed it anyway.”
Bruno lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Luca turned off the tape.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the recording.
Emma spoke carefully.
“Maybe Vittorio signed because he thought he could break it later.”
Luca looked at the handwritten note beside clause seven.
Invalid if Elena’s ledger survives.
Dante said, “That’s exactly what he was trying to do.”
Luca looked at Emma.
“By hiding Lily.”
She nodded slowly.
“He came to the hospital after she was born. He told me if you acknowledged her, people would come after her.”
“Did he say Vescari?”
“No.”
“What did he say?”
Emma remembered the room.
Lily asleep in a clear plastic bassinet.
Vittorio standing near the window.
Older than photographs.
Tired.
“He said, ‘Your daughter has inherited a war that started before her father was old enough to understand it.’”
Luca’s face changed.
Emma continued.
“He offered me money.”
Dante glanced at her.
“You refused?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he wasn’t buying silence.”
Luca watched her.
“What was he buying?”
“Distance.”
That hurt him.
She saw it.
“I thought distance was safer.”
“For three years?”
“Yes.”
“For me?”
“For Lily.”
Luca looked at his daughter.
Then at the letter.
His anger did not disappear.
It changed direction.
Dante’s phone vibrated.
He read the screen.
“Boss.”
“What?”
“We found the property records attached to Elena Moretti’s name.”
“How many?”
“Seven.”
“Anything dated March seventeenth?”
“One.”
Dante turned the phone.
An old storage company in Brooklyn.
Unit 9.
Registered to Elena Moretti under a private trust.
Still paid.
Still active.
Emma stared.
“For twenty-two years?”
“Yes.”
“By who?”
Dante scrolled.
Then stopped.
Luca saw his face.
“Who?”
“Vittorio.”
The answer landed quietly.
Luca stared at the screen.
His father had known where the second copy was.
Or at least how to keep it alive.
“Why didn’t he retrieve it?”
Bruno whispered, “Maybe because he knew the moment he did, Vincent would know.”
Dante nodded.
“The storage company logs access.”
Emma looked at Luca.
“So Vittorio left it untouched until Lily existed.”
Luca’s expression went cold.
Then purposeful.
“Get the car.”
Dante nodded.
Emma shifted Lily in her arms.
“I’m coming.”
Luca looked at her.
“No.”
She stared.
“No?”
“If my mother was right, that unit belongs to Lily.”
“Exactly.”
“Which is why you stay here with her.”
Emma’s eyes hardened.
“You spent three minutes being her father and now you’re giving me orders?”
Dante looked at the ceiling.
Bruno almost smiled.
Luca did not.
Then Lily reached toward him.
“Daddy?”
Everything stopped.
Emma’s face changed first.
Then Luca’s.
The word had come easily.
Naturally.
Lily did not know why everyone looked shocked.
She only held out her arms.
Luca took one slow step toward her.
Emma saw the decision happen.
He looked at Dante.
“Change of plan.”
“Boss?”
“We all go.”
Then Luca turned toward the archive door.
“Bring Belini.”
Emma frowned.
“Why?”
May you like
His expression hardened.
“Because if her family spent twenty-two years waiting for that unit to open, I want to see her face when it does.”
